The change in the UI Design approach

These are the top 10 trends we will cover:

  • Fullscreen smartphones
  • Unique illustration and animation
  • Storytelling
  • AR
  • VR
  • AI
  • Responsive colors

First Five UI Design Trends

1. Fullscreen smartphones

Most phones have lost their borders and have rounded edges. This changes their interface quite a bit. It will pose challenges for designers to use sharp-edged elements in their mobile UI and app design.

2.Unique illustration and animation

Digital or hand-drawn, 2D or 3D, custom illustrations, you name it. The free forms, unaligned designs, and vast asymmetries not only help platforms stand out from the generic, but they also create a friendly and inviting environment and bring users a better experience.

3. Storytelling

The ability to tell great stories around a digital experience will continue to trend among the best. Typography itself can build a strong visual hierarchy. An extremely crucial element of UI, it plays a major role in bringing about an excellent user experience.

4. Augmented Reality

In 2020, web design trends will involve thinking outside the box, or rather sticking to the grid. We need to forget UI fixed to screens. Instead, we should emphasize interactions which feel like they take place within the real-world environment. Google and Apple have already introduced their own AR development platforms, ARCore and AEKit, that blend the physical and digital worlds. AR UI can have different approaches:

  • Object-related, real-world objects that have tethered interaction;

  • Fixed to screen space, where the user has to position the camera in a specific way;

  • Real-world related, which uses the surrounding physical world.

5. Virtual Reality

2019 has been a year of progress for Virtual reality. We could call it the internet of experiences because of the effect that it has on users.

Although VR headsets bring most of the excitement to the gaming audience for now, VR experts predict that since the Oculus Quest launched, many opportunities have opened for other industries. For instance it would be a great possibility for healthcare to help cure phobias or in education to enhance interaction.

Second Five UI Design Trends

6. Artificial Intelligence

It’s no surprise that in 2020, AI will be it integrated into almost every possible product.

I highly doubt that it will replace designers though. Moreover, it will probably ease and benefit our work.

7. Responsive colors

It has been around for a while now and brands have progressively been adopting it. You have probably seen it on Dropbox and Spotify and not that long ago, Facebook has also implemented it to its company brand. Instead of owning a single symbolical color the brand is responsive to its context. It can be a number of predefined ones or a dynamic color system that takes on the color of its environment.

8. Oversized, bold typography

Bold typography will hold its place in 2020. Moreover, it’ll probably grow even bigger.  It doesn’t only look good, but this eye-catching solution also excites and shocks the visitors of a website, and makes them spend more time on it.

In contrast to UI, considering the user experience aspect, a large text that doesn’t say much might not bring the results we expect. Yes, the user will be curious and will probably scroll through the page to see what happens next, but they might not convert.

9. Broken grid, asymmetrical layouts

It seems that the upcoming year will not be famous for tidy and traditional grid usage. We will notice a lot of overlapping elements. Split screens are coming back to life but now there’s a twist to it, they’re also combined with asymmetrical layout. It mostly consists of elements placed in a very unusual way, yet not randomly. We will encounter lots of overlaps and a generous amount of whitespace.

10.Skeuomorphic design

Is it making a comeback? It’s been spreading faster than fire on Dribbble. For those who are not familiar with this term, in user interface design Skeuomorphism refers to elements that are designed in a very realistic way so that they simulate a real-life object with as much proximity as possible.I had mixed feelings about it back in the past and I feel similarly today too. As much as I love the effort behind it, the combination of soft shadows and gradients bringing an element to life and making it seem real, I can’t help but think about its feasibility.
